What is Disability Management?  Disability Management team members help facilitate a team-oriented approach to provide effective, efficient and safe co-ordination of services required to assist injured and ill individuals to attain their maximum level of functioning and ability to return to work. Those trained in this area may work as Disability Managers, Patient Case Managers, Return to Work Facilitators, Vocational Rehabilitation Consultants, Vocational Counsellors, Employee Wellness Program Administrators.

will assist Disability Managers to reduce the human, social and economic costs of disability to workers and employers on a national scale.

The Disability Management Program at Dalhousie University  will be offering a  Certificate Program in Disability Management starting this September 2011. The Certificate consists of four academic half-credit courses to be taken as electives during the student’s Program studies at Dalhousie. Upon completion, students will graduate with both a Bachelor’s Degree and a Certificate in Disability Management.

Students do not have to apply to the Certificate Program, just register and complete the four required courses and they will be issued a Certificate from the Disability Management Office.

The four required disability management courses:

DISM3010: Introduction to Disability Management

DISM4010: Return to Work Planning and Communication

DISM4040: Strategies for Alternative Work and Prevention

DISM4050: Psycho-social Issues in Disability Management

All four courses are offered completely online using the Blackboard Learning System.  Students do not have to be online at any given time but are expected to complete the weekly modules and any additional assignments.

The Disability Management Office provides ongoing technical assistance to students. There is also a Help Desk on campus available to students seven days a week, including evenings.
